A young person’s career is their pathway through learning and work.
At Haverfordwest High VC School we have a planned programme of activities to help learners make decisions and plan their careers, both in school and after they leave.
Careers education and guidance is an essential part of the curriculum. The careers guidance programme starts in Year 7, when you focus on developing the LORIC qualities – Leadership, Organisation, Resilience, Initiative and Communication. The core of Careers Education and Guidance in KS3 is delivered through modules within the PSE lessons which are held during tutor time. At KS3, the emphasis is on raising awareness of the opportunities offered by the world of work and developing the key personal attributes deemed desirable by employers.
In Year 10 each student participates in a programme which analyses preferences and matches choices with career suggestions. All students in Year 10 also undertake a one week Work Experience placement which provides an opportunity to sample areas of interest and is a valuable addition to their personal and social development. In addition to this, World of Work events will be held across Key Stage 4 so that our young people get the opportunity to take part in volunteering projects, enterprise activities and learn about the importance of bilingualism in the workplace.
Careers Wales work very closely with our students and personal interviews are arranged with our on-site Careers Adviser. A flexible learning programme in Year 11 enables students to develop job searching skills such as letter writing, completing application forms, writing ‘curriculum vitae’ and interview techniques. This work is also reinforced by the skills aspect of the Welsh Baccalaureate.
For our 6th Form students, further advice and guidance is provided by form tutors during the completion of the UCAS application process. Our UCAS surgeries, held by our experienced team, will provide you with advice tailored to improving your personal statement writing skills. There is also a programme of mock interviews which will develop your confidence and technique when answering questions.
Please visit the Careers Wales website for further assistance. Here you will find a wealth of resources including careers quizzes, a CV builder and the Dewis Da – Why Choose Welsh? resources.
