Careers and the World of Work at Haverfordwest High

At Haverfordwest High VC School we have a planned programme of activities to help learners make decisions and plan their careers, both in school and after they leave.

Careers education and guidance is an essential part of the curriculum. The careers guidance programme starts in Year 7, when you focus on developing the LORIC qualities – Leadership, Organisation, Resilience, Initiative and Communication. The core of Careers Education and Guidance in KS3 is delivered through modules within the PSE lessons which are held during our fortnightly Health and Welbeing lessons. At KS3, the emphasis is on raising awareness of the opportunities offered by the world of work and developing the key personal attributes deemed desirable by employers.

In Year 10 and 11 each student participates in a programme which analyses preferences and matches choices with career suggestions. A flexible learning programme enables students to develop job searching skills such as letter writing, completing application forms, writing a ‘curriculum vitae’ as well as improving interview techniques. World of Work activities and trips across Key Stage 4 provide our young people with the opportunity to broaden their horizons and establish skills that employers value.

Careers Wales work very closely with our students and personal interviews are arranged with our on-site Careers Adviser. Find out  who you how to contact Careers Wales’ advice by phone, email or web chat here. Please visit the Careers Wales website for further assistance. Here you will find a wealth of resources including careers quizzes, a CV builder and the Dewis Da – Why Choose Welsh? resources.

For our 6th Form students, further advice and guidance is provided by form tutors during the completion of the UCAS application process. Our UCAS surgeries, held by our experienced team, will provide you with advice tailored to improving your personal statement writing skills. There is also a programme of mock interviews which will develop your confidence and technique when answering questions.
